If you dream to bring a touch of nature and adventure to your holidays, Belisaire embodies the village that will give you access to these two dimensions. By sailing or motorboat, canoeing or by taking the sea shuttle, you can reach the strange island that sits in the middle of the Bassin d'Arcachon. With the tides, the area of the Island of Birds varies from 165 hectares at high tide to 1,690 at low tide. The landscape is so different that the trip is worth visiting at least two times! The tide schedule will tell you what the island looks like. Even before drawing alongside, you will see the two famous houses on stilts that have become icons of the island. These huts, known as “tchanquées”, of the word Gascon chanca, which means stilts, have become symbols of the island and of the whole basin. The first of them was built at the end of the 19th century by an oyster farmer. However, the name of the island does not refer to this oyster-growing past, but defines it as a place of refuge for migratory birds and sea wolves that it has become at random in time. Indeed, birds are welcome there during their long and painful migratory journey. The Greylag Goose and Black-headed Gull are one of their migration stages. In winter, you can observe the break of the teal and the large cormorant. More than a thousand pairs of gray herons and other birds travel along this route. If you are passionate about birdwatching, the Teich Bird Park is, along with Bird Island, a place worth a visit. The 120 hectares of this nature reserve are designed to protect endangered species of wild birds and preserve their natural environment. Equipped with your binoculars, take advantage of the routes arranged with observation posts of choice, combined with unforgettable panoramas on the Basin.
